Crossing Guard Killed in Monterey Park

Abel Flores Castellanos was approaching the end of his work day as the 76 year old crossing guard sat on his folding chair on January 27 at the intersection of Garfield and Elmgate in the City of Monterrey Park. Castellanos had been a crossing guard for 10 years and always had a smile on his face. He graciously crossed children men and women across the street making sure their safety was never at stake. Unfortunately that Tuesday afternoon at about 3:40 P.M. a 2004 Ford Mustang struck and killed Castellanos. The driver had reportedly lost control of his vehicle and went over the curve of the sidewalk and struck Castellanos.

The driver of the mustang was a man by the name of Jin Yuan Yang who is only 19 years old. Yang had a passenger in his car who sustained injuries to her neck and knee. The passenger was later identified as Yang’s 53 year old mother and she was taken to Garfield medical Center. Jin Yuan Yang was not arrested.
